Garrett Metal Detectors Taking Orders for Paragon Detector
Garland, Texas (July 17, 2023) —Texas-based Garrett Metal Detectors announced today that it will begin taking orders for its newly released Paragon™ detector, effective immediately. Contact Garrett for information on lead times.
Paragon is the new capstone for Garrett’s line of walk-through security screening products, with best-in-class 66 detection zones and revolutionary new features for ease of use like Zero Touch™ NFC capability and Ambiscan™ directional sensitivity. The company describes Paragon as a culmination of forty years of security achievement in the world of walk-through metal detection, paving the way for more exciting developments in the future.
“Paragon was designed to fit its name which means ‘perfect example’.” said Steve Novakovich, CEO of Garrett. “We believe traditional walk-though metal detector architecture has a bright future in applications that require superior detection. It is still necessary to detect small metallic items in loss prevention environments and to find small knives and disassembled weapons in schools, entertainment venues, and government facilities. Recent ‘weapon detection’ systems struggle with these critical tasks. That’s where Paragon comes in. Paragon combines superior detection with an industry-leading feature set that helps security-minded operators get the most out of their security equipment. We are confident that Paragon will assume the pinnacle position of the security screening hierarchy.”

Garrett Detectors Installed in Laredo School District
Garland, Texas (March 03, 2023) —Texas-based Garrett Metal Detectors announced today that its Multi Zone walk-through metal detector has been introduced to 31 schools in the Laredo Independent School District. These machines have been added to all elementary, middle, and high school campuses as part of LISD’s proactive approach to school security.
“Our students are the most precious commodities and jewels of our parents, so we have to take an active approach to assure their safety and security at all times,” said Oscar Perez, Executive Director of Health and Safety for Laredo ISD. “We are taking action, so there’s a lot of investment on behalf of our school district, not only with purchasing the equipment, but with the training as well.”
Garrett’s Multi Zone has found wide acceptance in the world of K-12 security as a product that was designed specifically for schools as a cost-effective solution for the diverse security needs of school environments. The Multi Zone can be programmed to detect not only guns and similar threat objects, but also the knives and vape pens that some other mass screening technologies with low detection capabilities fail to find. Garrett recommends thorough testing to fully evaluate the claims of competing technologies.
“Some newer technologies claim to detect weapons using artificial intelligence. I don’t think it’s very intelligent to miss knives, disassembled weapons, and small handguns.” said Steve Novakovich, CEO of Garrett. “Garrett’s proven technology has been protecting schools for many years and we have solved the cost and operational challenges that go along with effective security screening in K-12 environments. That intelligence is real, not artificial. We applaud Mr. Perez and the Laredo Independent School District for doing their homework and choosing Garrett’s highly effective security technology. With Garrett you have a true last line of defense securing your school!”

Garrett Response to Gizmodo Hacking Article
On December 21, 2021, the design, technology, and science website Gizmodo published an article by Lucas Ropek entitled “Walk-Through Metal Detectors Can Be Hacked, New Research Finds”. A subtitle added “Garrett Metal Detectors, which are used in schools and government buildings, have security vulnerabilities that can be remotely exploited”.
The response issued by Garrett is that Mr. Ropek used a sensational title to drive interest in his article. While perhaps that is to be expected, the content of the article omits important, relevant information in order to cast doubt on the integrity of checkpoint security installations. Had Garrett been given a reasonable amount of time to respond to Mr. Ropek’s request for information, the Company would have requested to include the following pertinent information:
- Garrett’s walk-through metal detectors have been protecting the public since 1984 with no known incidents of hacking.
- Fewer than 1% of Garrett’s installed base of PD 6500i and MZ 6100 (Multi Zone) detectors includes a network integration accessory (a Garrett CMA or IC Module), and thus are not susceptible to the reported vulnerability.
- Many customers who have purchased these accessories use them for data collection in a manner in which they are not connected to any type of network. These are not vulnerable to hacking.
- Those customers who do connect the devices to a network typically employ robust firewall technologies to isolate connected devices from potential hackers.
- The WiFi protocols in the wireless versions of the integration accessories use robust data encryption to prevent intrusion into the network.
- The only Garrett detectors that have any level of risk of hacking are the ones that both include the network integration accessory and are connected to a user’s unprotected network.
- The vulnerabilities identified by Cisco that were mentioned in the article were addressed by a Garrett software update to the CMA and IC Module accessories before Mr. Ropek’s article was published and the effectiveness of those fixes have been certified by Cisco to be effective.
- Garrett’s CMA and IC Module software update is currently available for customers who need it. Please contact Garrett technical support at security@garrrett.com or by calling Garrett at 1 800-234-6151.
- The operating systems and software on the PD 6500i and MZ 6100 are isolated from the IC Module and can only be updated through physical access to the hardware. Remote firmware updates for the PD 6500i and MZ 6100 are not supported.

Garrett PD-6500i Receives ECAC Certification
“The ECAC certification is a standard similar to that of TSA certification in the US, and it has been adopted by a much wider international security market outside of Europe,” said Aaron Arellano, Senior Product Manager for Garrett. “Achieving this EU certification further validates the technology and sophisticated capabilities of the Garrett PD-6500i walk-through metal detector.”
Garrett’s PD-6500i is a 33-zone security walkthrough that already meets many of the world’s most rigorous certifications, including those of the TSA (US airport standards), STAC (French airport standards), AENA (Spanish airport standards), and CJIAC (Japanese airport standards). The latest ECAC certification was the result of the PD-6500i’s successful completion of the ECAC Common Evaluation Process (CEP), wherein the product demonstrated its consistent, repeatable, and reliable performance against rigorous industry testing procedures.
“We hear from increasing numbers of customers that they trust the ECAC standard, and not only in Europe. Furthermore, the ECAC standard, unlike the NIJ standard, comes with third-party test validation. As a result, security buyers can rest assured that ECAC-certified products perform to the standard. This is not the case with products that claim to be NIJ compliant, as those claims are solely based on the subjective self-certifications of the manufacturers,” said Garrett CEO Steve Novakovich.
