Congratulations to our US Favorite Finds winner Hal W. from Alabama!
Hal and his fiancé both enjoy hunting with their AT Pro’s, and this fall Hal made an extremely rare Civil War-era recovery. He first dug the solid brass wreath portion of a 2-piece buckle and then returned to the Alabama site with his AT Pro weeks later. Not far from the first half of the buckle, at about a six-inch depth, Hal dug the tongue portion. But the letters stamped on it were not ones he was familiar with: CHMA.
Hal did some research and determined that it was most likely from Charlotte Hall Military Academy. This elite school, located in Charlotte Hall, Maryland, was established by Queen Charlotte in 1774. It is possible this cast brass belt plate was reserved for only teachers, a headmaster, or a high-ranking cadet. Several Civil War historians are currently researching this relic, as no other CHMA are known to have been dug.

John’s final hunt before New Year’s Day proved to be a brilliant year-ender. At a local soccer field, his AT Pro gave a nice signal with a 47 Target ID.
