Garrett and Rohde & Schwarz develop an integrated solution for high security screening applications

Garrett integrates its walk-through metal detector with the Rohde & Schwarz' R&S QPS201 security scanner. The combined solution is ideally suited for high-risk scenarios like prisons or loss prevention in the precious metals industry. Using cutting-edge millimeterwave (mmWave) technology, the R&S QPS201 detects all types of objects, regardless of material. To bolster detection in high security screening scenarios, the Garrett Paragon walk-through metal detector uniquely complements mmWave detection by identifying extremely small or internally concealed metallic threats, providing an additional layer of security against hidden body-borne items.

MUNICH, April 2, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The combination of metal detectors with mmWave security scanners provides the highest detection capability and comfort for certain loss prevention use cases and in prisons. It is ideal where the detection of the smallest or internally concealed metallic objects is needed but also delivers the highest level of detection capabilities for e.g. non-metallic items or metallic powders with efficient and intuitive procedures with the R&S QPS201. A largely unknown fact is that despite being of metallic origin, many substances are only reliably discovered by metal detectors in their solid, bulk form. The Rohde & Schwarz's R&S QPS201 security scanner augments the detection with metallic powders, granules, and compounds in a liquid or chemical. The metal detector on the other hand is capable of spotting metallic objects in skin folds, body cavities, and inside the mouth of persons, all of which are especially important for prison security.

A woman walks through an integrated Paragon and QPS 201 screening checkpoint. The integrated solution not only enhances the detection of threats but also respects the personal boundaries of those screened, demonstrating the future of comprehensive and respectful security measures. Accurate zone line indication enables significantly simplified targeted inspection and provides reliable forensic evidence in the case of incidents through result logging and integration with the CCTV. The combined solution is user-friendly and can be fully managed via the R&S QPS201 display with an integrated alarm results display. The screening procedure is fully contactless and neither mmWave nor metal detection pose health risks to security operators or scanned persons, because unlike X-rays, the levels of emissions by these devices are much lower than the levels of electromagnetic radiation that are naturally present in the environment.

"Combining the distinct capabilities of metal detectors and mmWave security scanners is what the market demanded from us for highest-level security screening procedures in the precious metals industry and for prisons", says Andreas Haegele, VP Microwave Imaging at Rohde & Schwarz. "By this integration, both Garrett and we are adding an additional layer of security to our individual offering for the benefit of our joint customers."

"Garrett is pleased to collaborate with Rohde & Schwarz to bring to market a thoughtful integration of two powerful technologies. This new capability will help our customers create safer environments for people to work, learn, and travel in, and will enable innovative new counter-contraband and loss prevention strategies" says Steve Novakovich, CEO of Garrett Electronics.

Sport Division Update: September 18, 2024

In the course of final testing the Vortex, the Garrett team has chosen to improve the environmental protection of the rear case connectors. Although failures due to corrosion were unlikely to occur for many months or even years, the original design does not meet Garrett quality standards. We have therefore opted to take the effort to create a more robust sealing system.

Initial product shipments are now expected to begin prior to Thanksgiving, so Vortex can be delivered in time of the holidays.

Customer satisfaction and product quality are always of foremost concern to Garrett. We trust our dealers, distributors and customers will appreciate this move, as it was deemed important to the long-term success of the new Vortex product line.

Garrett Detectors Installed in Laredo School District

Garland, Texas (March 03, 2023) —Texas-based Garrett Metal Detectors announced today that its Multi Zone walk-through metal detector has been introduced to 31 schools in the Laredo Independent School District. These machines have been added to all elementary, middle, and high school campuses as part of LISD’s proactive approach to school security.

“Our students are the most precious commodities and jewels of our parents, so we have to take an active approach to assure their safety and security at all times,” said Oscar Perez, Executive Director of Health and Safety for Laredo ISD. “We are taking action, so there’s a lot of investment on behalf of our school district, not only with purchasing the equipment, but with the training as well.”

Garrett’s Multi Zone has found wide acceptance in the world of K-12 security as a product that was designed specifically for schools as a cost-effective solution for the diverse security needs of school environments. The Multi Zone can be programmed to detect not only guns and similar threat objects, but also the knives and vape pens that some other mass screening technologies with low detection capabilities fail to find. Garrett recommends thorough testing to fully evaluate the claims of competing technologies.

“Some newer technologies claim to detect weapons using artificial intelligence. I don’t think it’s very intelligent to miss knives, disassembled weapons, and small handguns.” said Steve Novakovich, CEO of Garrett. “Garrett’s proven technology has been protecting schools for many years and we have solved the cost and operational challenges that go along with effective security screening in K-12 environments. That intelligence is real, not artificial. We applaud Mr. Perez and the Laredo Independent School District for doing their homework and choosing Garrett’s highly effective security technology. With Garrett you have a true last line of defense securing your school!”

Garrett PD-6500i Receives ECAC Certification

Garland, Texas (September 24, 2021) —Texas-based Garrett Metal Detectors announced today that its PD-6500i model walk-through metal detector has passed third party testing and has been certified to comply with Standard 2 European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC) requirements. This performance standard, which was established for airports in the European Union (EU), is now recognized as a highly sought-after indicator of quality and performance for security equipment that has passed rigorous laboratory testing procedures.

“The ECAC certification is a standard similar to that of TSA certification in the US, and it has been adopted by a much wider international security market outside of Europe,” said Aaron Arellano, Senior Product Manager for Garrett. “Achieving this EU certification further validates the technology and sophisticated capabilities of the Garrett PD-6500i walk-through metal detector.”

Garrett’s PD-6500i is a 33-zone security walkthrough that already meets many of the world’s most rigorous certifications, including those of the TSA (US airport standards), STAC (French airport standards), AENA (Spanish airport standards), and CJIAC (Japanese airport standards). The latest ECAC certification was the result of the PD-6500i’s successful completion of the ECAC Common Evaluation Process (CEP), wherein the product demonstrated its consistent, repeatable, and reliable performance against rigorous industry testing procedures.

“We hear from increasing numbers of customers that they trust the ECAC standard, and not only in Europe. Furthermore, the ECAC standard, unlike the NIJ standard, comes with third-party test validation. As a result, security buyers can rest assured that ECAC-certified products perform to the standard. This is not the case with products that claim to be NIJ compliant, as those claims are solely based on the subjective self-certifications of the manufacturers,” said Garrett CEO Steve Novakovich.
