WINNER #1
My U.S. favorite find is the Gold Pocket Watch, found by Clarence H. from South Dakota with his GTI 1500.

Clarence’s story: “I spent quite a few hours at the local park looking for coins and jewelry. Having found lots of pennies and clad coins along the play ground and sidewalk. I thought why not go across the road where they parked the vehicles. I spent a short time looking and got a beep that sounded good and checked the depth and size. It showed bigger than a coin but I dug it anyway and when I took the plug out I could see the gold of the stem. I began to think whatever it was it was gold so removed it from the hole. I first noticed that the face had no numbers or cover. I cleaned some of the dirt off and seen that there was a cover on the back which I opened to find a serial number and 18K marking. I went home and did an internet search and found that the watch was made in 1866 making it my oldest and best find. Took awhile for it to sink in what I had was the best find of my 40 years of detecting.”

WINNER #2
My second U.S. favorite find is the 1909 D $5 Gold Indian Head Half Eagle, found by Dr. Michael M. from Massachusetts with his AT Pro.

Michael’s story (edited): “I was working a wooded area near a 1912 homestead cellar hole. I was finding the usual junk iron and nails; usually run a wide open screen on my machines and dig everything. After about an hour of digging nothing of great value I began searching the rear of the house area (now part of a corn field) in a small grid based on my search flags positioned in the ground. While overlapping the first with the second at 90 degrees I received an interesting odd mid-higher tone with an ID of 67. I dug an 8" plug in the rich soil and began exploring the area with the pin-pointer so not to damage whatever was in the hole. It “shouted” an inch more and I scooped dirt out of the hole with my gloved hand. I very quickly noticed a shiny gold object that looked at first glance like a golden screw cap that I’ve dug about a thousand times. My deep disappointment to sheer joy happened when I observed an image on the object. I screamed to myself “Holy Crap” it’s a gold coin. A 1909 D Indian Head Half Eagle was in my hand! I think it will be tough to top this find. It is my first gold coin. The jeweler’s cleaning made the coin look beautiful, only making the experience of the find more significant. After carefully examining the coin it appears to have a grade of extra fine.”

My third U.S. favorite find is the pair of Revolutionary War British fittings, found by Joseph E. from New Jersey with his AT Pro.

Joseph’s story: “The family all went on a trip to my in-laws cabin in NH recently. My father-in-law always told me about these old foundations up the hill behind his place but we never seem to have hiked up there. Well this time he told me to bring my metal detector. We waited until the last day of our vacation and only had a few hours to spare so we finally hiked up. We immediately came across hits all over. He had a hit and began to dig and had to have my son, who faithfully wielded the only Pro Pointer, to help in his hole. Low and behold they found the first silver plated “fitting”. Much celebration as we knew it was old but not sure of what it exactly was, and he moved on. I was near him so as I came around I got a high hit almost in his same hole with my AT Pro. So I called my son over and we dug and out popped the other fitting! They are in beautiful condition for their age. I searched the internet and came across a man by the name of Don Troinani who has a website and appears to be one of the foremost experts in Revolutionary War history. I sent him the pics and he confirmed they were Revolutionary War British horse bridle adornment fittings! Needless to say we were very excited and have plans to return to the sight soon! Our first Revolutionary War relic finds and they are British to boot. Very exciting. All my father-in law said the entire time was “I need one of those pointer things”. I ordered him one the other day but got him the newer Pro-Pointer AT.”

My fourth U.S. favorite find is the Silver Ring, found by Paul M. from Louisiana with his AT Gold.

Paul’s story: “I hit the local lake/beach last Sunday afternoon. First target was a scratchy mid tone, not too promising, but I’ll dig it anyway. 2 scoops down, out pops the ring box, straddling the edge of the scoop. Strange. Well, maybe there’s a ring in the hole to go with it. Sure enough, pass the coil over the hole, still have a signal. Another scoop, out pops a tarnished ring. Cleaned it off a little with some sand, 925. Imagine the story that must be behind this, a ring in the box in the lake. I would like to know that story.”

WINNER #5
My fifth U.S. favorite finds are the Civil War NY Militia State Seal Excelsior Officer Coat Buttons, found by Kimmie P. from North Carolina with her AT Pro.

Kimmie’s story (edited): “I have an addiction: Metal detecting! I listened as Lee and Gerald (friends) spoke about the next day’s permission, as the conversation turned to the historic maps of Virginia hills. We traced old rivers and roads enabling us to pinpoint our location and plan our attack. We had been to this site once before and found very few relics so we were hopeful, but prepared to work hard for our finds. The next morning our team set out into the woods and surprisingly a few bullets popped up rather quickly, and then, nothing. The place was littered with modern shells and ammunition but I was content to dig all day, driven by the potential of uncovering history. I had wandered down to the creek bed hoping for some luck when I received a text message from Lee. “I’m at the end of the property and I just dug a three ringer!” It’s amazing how quickly a team can become rejuvenated when someone finds something good! Just then Gerald shouts, “I’ve got another bullet!” My next hit was a bit jumpy, going down to 54 then up to the low 70s, but predominately 63. The AT Pro is fabulous at finding masked targets so I was thinking I may have multiple items in the hole. I cut my plug extra wide and began to dig eight inches down. I grabbed for my pin pointer and narrowed the location, moving the loosened soil out of the way. I immediately spied the shank of a button. “Oh Yea! Chick just dug a button!” I shouted with a huge grin on my face. By now Lee was at my side. “No way! You just dug an officer’s coat button!” I handed the button to Lee, “Take it, I can’t hold it! I’m shaking! If this is the last thing I dig all weekend, I’m good!” Gerald said, “Good find Kimmie!”

“The next target was ringing up to the 80s, down to the 60s and I was pretty sure it was a civil war bullet. As I pulled out the plug I saw what appeared to be a flat button. “Oh wow,” I said. “Did you just find another one?” Lee yelled. “I got a really nice flat button”, I replied. I tried to read the writing on what I thought was the front. I quickly realized it was actually a button back! My heart jumped as my attention went to the plug. I immediately spied a shining glint of gold and green peeking from the clod. I carefully plucked out the top part of the button which had just come apart in the plug. The inside was shimmering with a near-pristine gold gilt. Lee exclaimed “You just dug my bucket list button! That’s a New York button!” I was speechless! Upon further inspection we realize the buttons I dug were identical, both being New York Militia State Seal Excelsior buttons. To my absolute amazement, based on where we were digging, troop movement, and the dates of battle, I am able to say with strong certainty my buttons were lost by an officer of the 71st New York Militia on June 29, 1862.”

AUGUST 2016 HAS FOUR WINNERS!

WINNER #1
My favorite U.S. favorite find for August 2016 is the Silver 1652 Pine Tree Schilling, found by Steve S. from Massachusetts with his AT Pro and Pro-Pointer II.

Steve’s story (edited): “Most Saturday mornings I spend valuable bonding time metal detecting with my teen son Jonathan. He loves the hobby of finding and collecting old coins just as much as his dad. We belong to a club in central Massachusetts that meets once a month, 1 hour from our home. I had just purchased a new AT Pro for my son’s 15th birthday, yet this story used my older AT Pro with the standard Double-D. This past Saturday morning, my son and I headed out to a local farm dating back to the 1700’s. The area I was working was the location of a barn that was demolished back in the 1930’s. After a few hours of not finding much, I heard a faint tone in the 75-81 zone. The depth indicator was between 8 and 10, and at 8 inches we saw something silver with strange markings. My son looked at me, and I looked at him and couldn’t believe our eyes. I knew it was old but had no idea it was rare. My son and I dusted it off and fell back for a moment then high-fived each other. I will never forget that moment he and and I shared after finding this. After being sent to ANACS, it was authenticated and graded VF-35. It’s a 1652 NOE 18 Pine Tree Schilling, a find of a lifetime. Treasures like this still exist and are waiting to be found. My son told me this is what keeps him alive in the hobby. You just never know what you are going to dig up!”

WINNER #2
My second U.S. favorite find for August 2016 is the 18k Gold European cut diamond ring, found by Jim K. from Michigan with his AT Pro.

Jim’s story: “First off I am very fortunate to have found a site that produces finds like this. Second I’m thankful to have a water machine that can handle the iron infested areas like my AT Pro can! I was working the iron again this day, already had a V nickel, a buffalo, a silver rosie and Washington. I was getting a little tired and thinking about calling it a day. I decided to push a little harder, just one gold, any gold and then you can quit, I told myself. I then picked out a nice crispy mid tone through the iron. I thought it was going to be another buffalo, but what I saw in my scoop was no buff. Sleeping with iron for over a century, it’s color was pretty off, but when I picked it up there was no mistaking the weight. Already excited I looked inside for karat marks, and was just blown away! It read “Julia To Mason Xmas 1890" with the old style block mark of 18K! I immediately knew it was the best ring I’ve ever found with over four hundred preceding it. Turns out to be 9.9 grams of 18k, with a half carat European cut diamond. Not sure if I’ll ever top this find, but I know I’ll have a lot of fun trying to! Thanks Garrett!!”

My third favorite U.S. favorite find for August 2016 is the Confederate Virginia Officers Sword Belt Plate, found by Lee J. from Virginia with his AT Gold.

Lee’s story: “On 8/06/2016 I ventured to a new permission with my AT Gold on some land that I just obtained in central VA. Little did I know my whole life was about to change. Twenty years of hunting I have dreamed over finding a Confederate plate. Little did I know that day I would dig my holy grail! A civil Virginia officers sword belt plate. Rung up a solid 88 on my AT Gold. I told my buddy before I dug it I got either a plate or a soda can. The AT Gold has come through for me again and again. Thanks for making a great machine.”

WINNER #1
My U.S. favorite find for July 2016 is the War of 1812 Light Artillery 1st Regiment Flat Button, found by Steve V. from Indiana, with his AT Pro.

Steve’s story: “Hello. After our May 2016 club hunt, I decided to try detecting a new to me spot in a public park that is next to a river. Several club members have told me that the location used to be a fur trader outpost. I was detecting for about a 1/2 hour trying to find a decent signal thru all the square nails that litter the site when I hit a small mid tone target that would bounce into the 70’s on the AT Pro. I dug down 8-9 inches and out popped this beautiful Light Artillery 1 Regiment flat button. I did not know what I had at first, but a club member gave me an ID and a date used of 1808 to 1820. I am very excited to have found a relic from the War of 1812 and could have possibly been lost before Indiana was even a State. Thank you, Steve.”

WINNER #2
My second U.S. favorite find for July 2016 is the Silver Mesh Coin Purse Full of Barber Coins, found by Joe F. from Minnesota with his Ace 250.

Joe’s story: “On a family vacation in Maine we went to a park on the site of a hotel that burned down in the early 1900’s where we have found many coins in the past. This time I ventured into the edge of the woods since the vegetation wasn't too thick and got a quarter signal about 5 inches deep. I cut my plug and pulled it up…nothing in the plug which means it’s truly a deep target. At about 5 inches I pulled out a clump of dirt and noticed a clasp. Not quite sure what it was I removed it from the dirt and immediately recognized it as a small coin purse and it had some weight to it. I could feel coins inside and my blood started pumping. I carefully opened the clasp, not sure if the purse would destruct, and immediately saw the edge of a silver coin. Only wide enough for two fingers, I carefully reached inside and pulled out a 1896 BARBER QUARTER and there were still coins inside! The dirt was thick so I could not see what was inside but I reached in with my fingers and clasped a coin and gently pulled it out...an 1898 S BARBER HALF DOLLAR! There were still more coins in the purse, a 1901 V NICKEL and an 1898 BARBER DIME! I was in shock and excited. I packed the coins and purse in a paper towel and headed back to the hotel. I rinsed off the purse and found out that it too was SILVER!”

“All together I found a vintage silver coin purse, barber dime, barber quarter, barber half dollar and a V nickel in one hole. The attached photo is one of the coins and purse fresh out of the ground. You will notice that the v-nickel was sitting between the dime and the half dollar and left a green “circle” on the half and green patina on the dime. I also included an obverse photo of the half dollar for good measure. Thanks for a great product!”

My second U.S. favorite find is the 1652 Pine Tree Shilling, found by Craig A. from Connecticut with his AT Pro.

Craig’s Story (edited): “This is truly a story of dumb luck and right place / right time. A couple of nights ago after dinner I decided to kill a couple of hours at a local property I have permission to hunt. At one time the land was a farm and before that part of the forest. I knew that at one point there were many parties held on the property so I hoped for some early to mid century silver and perhaps some lost jewelry. After a couple of clad coins the AT Pro hit a bouncing signal I have rarely seen. 81 right to 88 and back again. After a few passes it settled in like a quarter… high 80’s but still chirpy at 8 inches. I cut the plug, pulled it out and searched with the pin pointer. Hit the signal with the pinpointer on a sidewall. In went the Leche careful to get behind whatever was in the wall, and this beauty popped out! Could not believe my eyes. It’s been only two days since the find, and to tell the truth I’m really still a bit numb and not sure what to do next! Thanks for a wonderful machine!”

My third U.S. favorite find is the Revolutionary War Prince of Wales Pin, found by Bradley M. from Rhode Island with his AT Pro.

“Hello, my name is Bradley. I havent been having much luck lately. I went out on a detecting adventure in Bristol Rhode Island and then finally luck hit me. I found what I believe to be my best find yet!! A revolutionary era PRINCE OF WALES pin! Not sure if it is from a uniform or horse saddle. But it is so amazing and this really charged my batteries. It’s things like this that keep me hooked. I have had my AT Pro for 6 years and I absolutely love it as much as I did on day one. I have a new addition to my family on the way! A baby boy who one day will be using this machine or one of his own if I cant give this one up. Thanks so much!"

WINNER #4
My fourth U.S. favorite find is the Pre-1937 Eagle Scout 14k White Gold Ring, found by Brandon D. from Illinois, with his AT Pro.

Brandon’s Story: “While detecting at my favorite park I got a bouncy 66-72 signal 6 inches deep. Assuming the usual pull tab I kneeled down and cut my plug, rolled it over and saw the thin edge of an off white “pull tab”. Upon a closer look it turned out to be this amazing price of Americana history. A beautiful 14k white gold Eagle Scout ring. After doing some research it happens to be a Type 1e. They changed the design in 1937 to a more square Art Deco design. It breaks my heart to think that a kid worked his butt off to earn such a distinguished honor and lose his ring. I wish there was a name inside so I could return it to him or his family. But I will display it with honor and respect for a time gone by. My rarest and most priceless find. God Bless America!”

My U.S. favorite find for May 2016 is the 1882 Double Eagle Gold Coin, found by Frank M. from California with his AT Pro.

Frank’s story: (edited) “I’ve been working this old mining camp in northern California for about a year now. I’ve found lanterns, harmonica reeds, clock parts, horseshoes, etc. I dug square nails all over. Something was there at some point! I’m ignoring the iron and going slow when beep! A high tone. Quarter I thought, right next to the growl of iron. So i dug. Boom! I saw the edge and it was bright yellow. I panicked a little and grabbed my phone to document it. My phone wouldn’t work. Duh! I still had my gloves on. My touchscreen phone doesn’t like gloves. I knew that, but my head was racing. Finally got a picture of a half dug gold coin. Then i dug it up. 20 dollar gold piece! My first gold coin and she is the biggest one! I didn’t dig anymore and left quickly to get home. I’m going back next week. It’s been five days and can barely sleep.”

My fourth U.S. favorite find is the Catholic Charm, found by Juan P. from Garland, TX with his AT Pro.

Juan’s story: “On May 24th, 2016, after volunteering to deliver food to an elementary school, I had about 2 hours to detect and I decided to do a permission hunt. I was able to get a yes after asking two homes. A man in his 80’s came to the door with his caretaker. I explained what I was doing and he was quick to say yes, that I could keep anything I found. After finding a hand full of clad, I decided I would get my last signal which came in at 76. To my surprise, it was a charm made of copper with a coating of silver. I pulled it from the plug and decided I would show it to the elderly man. As he looked at the charm he begun to tear up and replied, This belonged to my wife, she lost it about 5-6 years ago, asked where I had found it, and I walked him over to the spot. He told me that the charm and a necklace were given to her. In 1960, during the birth of their first child, his wife had fallen ill and a priest had come to pray for her. The charm was gifted to her and she wore it all her life, till the day it was lost. He told me he had lost her 1 year and 16 days ago. He said he counts every day. At that moment, as I went to shake his hand, he reached around me to give me a hug. I asked if he would like to have it back. He replied, Very much so if you don’t mind. I told him, It’s yours. He then put it in his front shirt pocket and said, it will be by my heart until I can make it a necklace again and wear it till I pass. He invited me into his home, and above his entertainment center sat a picture of his wife, a beautiful, happy young lady taken in the 60’s with the charm around her neck. Memories are better than Gold and Silver.”

APRIL 2016 HAS SIX WINNERS!

WINNER #1
My first U.S. favorite finds for April 2016 are the two gold pieces, a 1906 $5 Liberty and a 1910 $5 Half Eagle, found by Jamie L. from Oregon, with his AT Gold.

Jamie’s story: “I was out detecting an area I had gone over several times before when I got a real good mid range signal. After cutting the plug I scooped out a handful of dirt to reveal a 1910 Indian Head $5 gold Half Eagle staring back at me. I was so excited about the find that I wasn’t thinking straight, couldn’t focus on detecting any more and went home to inspect my newfound treasure. Laying in bed that night I realized I had made a critical mistake. I forgot to re-check the hole as I usually do. I wasn’t able to get back out for a whole week later, all the while kicking myself for my huge error. When I finally made it back I immediately went to the same exact spot, turned on the AT Gold, and gave it a swing. My heart stopped as I got another distinct mid-range signal. The same plug removed from the week before and my pin-pointer said there was something in it. I carefully tore it apart by hand to discover… a 1906 $5 LIBERTY! Talk about luck! Thank you Garrett, for giving me the ability to make such an awesome discovery. Tally another happy customer and another Garrett machine that has officially paid for itself.”

My second U.S. favorite find for April 2016 is the Quartz/Gold, discovered by Kurt S., from California, with his AT Gold.

Kurt’s story: "This story is on the cusp of being too good to be true but it happened and it happened to me! I only had a half hour of free time so I grabbed my AT Gold and went to a place I’ve been trying to find gold at, but only finding lead. I chose to work the top of a hill so I fired up my machine, ground balanced it and started sweeping. In 30 seconds I got a hit in the 55 range. I dug a scoop out with my shovel and placed it next to the hole and scanned the hole. The target was gone so I started probing my scoop with my hand held (different brand) pin pointer. I was looking for lead but noticed my pin pointer went off on this potato sized rock. I poked at the rock in 5 different places and the pin pointer went crazy every time! I picked it up and noted it was VERY heavy. I wiped it off and GOLD glittered everywhere and I could see it even without my glasses! I quickly scanned the area and left. I found a rock with 10.4 ounces of gold in it and didn't even get dirty! This was not beginners luck. I have hundreds of hours in digging up garbage prior to this. It was simply my turn to uncover something amazing. I’m buying an ATX and going back! This story is 100% true and it happened 2 weeks ago."

My fifth U.S. favorite find for April 2016 is the 1877 Trade Dollar, found by Ronald W., from Massachusetts, with his AT Pro.

Ron’s story: "I’ve been detecting a property I received permission on for almost a month now. I use an AT Pro and after owning other machines, I’m really liking it. I’ve been taking my time, swinging low and slow with great results. So many finds here, from colonial to clad, I’ve found it all! On this day I was on a mission to find my 25th silver for the year, and the way this permission has been going, my chances were good. I had been detecting for about an hour when I got a choppy 94-96 at 8 to 10 inches. After cutting a big plug and pulling it out I still couldn’t get a signal with my pinpointer. After digging another 5 inches, I finally got a hit at almost 10 inches. When I pulled this out, I couldn’t believe my eyes! I’ve been detecting for 4 years now and still on the hunt for my first silver dollar. But finding this 1877 Trade Dollar as my first was definitely better than I could have ever expected!"

My sixth U.S. favorite find for April 2016 is the 1892 World Columbian Exhibition Medal, discovered by Mark M., from Pennsylvania, with his AT Pro.

Marks story: "Just started metal detecting in August 2015 with an Ace 350, upgraded shortly after to an AT Pro. Fast forward to last Sunday 4-3 Cold weather kept me home that day, Later in the afternoon I decided to hit my backyard, AGAIN probably for the 12th time. I had a 91 on the ID but with some null in the tone, and couldn’t get a pinpoint on it. Target depth said 10+ so I dug it, pinpointer in the hole, Nothing! I filled it in, rescanned, got a slight pinpoint about 6 inches to left of original plug and again 10+ on the depth. I dug a plug, about 10 in. down, stuck the hori hori knife in and popped about two more inches of dirt out of the hole and thats when I saw this honker in the hole. This thing is 2 inches in diameter. For me, this was an eyepopping, mindblowing, coolest ever find. Can’t wait to see what finds lie ahead."

Sebastion’s story: “I found this ultra rare button in a union camp I have been working for over a year. It’s currently under development and will no longer be with us soon. I had no idea what I had dug till I got home and cleaned it up. This button is known as the bushy tree version, and was produced through 1832-35, and abruptly stopped when Eyland passed away. It is one of the rarest versions of the S.C. buttons. I couldn’t have done it without my AT Pro.”

My third favorite find is the 1821 Capped Bust Dime, found by Mark A. from Connecticut with his AT Gold.

Mark’s story: “I recieved a new permission to detect a 1780s home and after finding two large cents, an 1889 indian head, and some other relics I moved to a new area of the lawn 10 feet off the edge of the driveway. My first signal was a solid 80 on my AT Gold, only 3-4 inches deep. I dug my plug and saw the eagle on the coin. At first I thought I had a seated dime, then I turned it over and saw the bust and knew I had a capped bust dime, 1821. I couldn’t believe it! This is only my 3rd year detecting. I cant wait to go back to that house and see what else is there. Thanks Garrett for such a great detector! :)”

Your machine beat them all this past year in our competitions. We have several categories: jewelry, coin, relics, judges choice, and scavenger. We also had a challenge by the president of our club to try to beat him. Points are awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place each month at our meeting. With your machine I won all but the jewelry category. Keep up the good work on your products.”

My second U.S. favorite find for February 2016 is the Civil War Saddle Ornament, found by Randall B. from Indiana, with his Ace 350.

Randall’s story: “My buddy from work invited me to go hunting with him at a local quarry and that’s where I found it! After hours of nothing but cans and junk (while he found early wheats, mercs, and war nickels) I almost gave up. I swung down by some water and heard a nice “DING!” Thinking it was nothing I almost passed it by but then thought “ehh why not”. I dug around this object and pulled it out of the ground. My heart sank because I thought maybe it was an emblem off of a car. I got on a facebook detecting community after I got home and found out exactly what it is. A civil war saddle ornament! I would like to thank Garrett for making such great machines. This has opened many doors for me including a hobby that me, my brother, and my friends can all do together.”

WINNER #1
My United States favorite find is the Coin Cache of 4 Spanish Reales, an 1819 Capped Bust Quarter, and an 1812 Capped Bust 5 Dollar Gold Piece, found by William F. from Connecticut with his AT Pro.

Will’s story: “I was invited to a first of the year hunt by new frends. We hunted a 1770’s homestead that is now converted to a bed and breakfast type retreat. My two buddies, Kevin and Doug, receive 100% credit for my finds because without their generosity this would have never happened. Swinging my AT Pro I hit an area near an old oak tree and got an iffy signal but on every other pass I would get a sweet high tone that was registering as high as 87 on the I.D., so I dug. 3 to 4 inches down I begin finding pottery and glass, then I hit an old iron nail which explains the messy tone. Further digging I see the rim of a silver coin…my excitement exploded. I called to Doug and he came running to video the dig. Upon pulling the coin and running water over it we discovered it is a Spanish Reale. We were both floored, and as any detectorist should do I rechecked my hole and bam ANOTHER Spanish Reale. Now I think this is not happening to me on new year’s day. At this point the homestead owners come out because of the excitement and I recheck the hole. BAM! Another target. I literally had to sit down…my legs were jelly…and you guessed it another Spanish Reale. Fast forward a few moments and more digging reveal 1 more Reale and an 1819 Capped Bust Quarter! So I figured what the heck let’s scan the hole again and you guessed it…another target only this time it wasn’t silver but a Capped Bust 5 Dollar Gold Piece from 1812!!!! At this point I’m ready to run down the street screaming because I’m not this lucky EVER!! And here I am, a year into metal detecting on January 1st digging what some people have tried to find for over 50 years. This is a day I will never ever forget. And a big thanks goes to Garrett for your top notch products. I thank you all for letting me share such a great experience, and have a happy new year!!!”

My second United States favorite find is the C.S.A. Buckle, found by Joseph H. from Alabama with his AT Pro.

Joseph’s story: “It was my first day off from work in 2016. My buddy Brad and I got out for the first hunt of 2016. Instead of going to some fields that we know pay off we decide to hit a park that was only finished a few months ago. At one time 3 houses and a general store sat on the site that is now a park. I was hoping at best some wheats maybe a little silver. Then early into the hunt only my 4th hole I get this crazy loud signal. Figuring a can I dig just to clear out the trash. Then before I know what happens a bent but beautiful C.S.A. Buckle is looking up at me. I could not believe what was in my hand. I snapped some pictures and sent them to a friend that knows more about Civil War items than I do. Needless to say my 2016 year started with a bang. This just goes to show that even new places have once been used for something else. Thanks Garrett for making great detectors.”

DECEMBER 2015 HAS THREE WINNERS!

WINNER #1
My U.S. favorite find for December 2015 is the 1820-1840 Militia Belt buckle, found by Mike P. from New York with his AT Pro.

Mike’s story: “Got a permission at a private property with a circa 1820’s house I’d been waiting for a long time. The owner couldnt have been more pleasent, and said my favorite words, “have at it!” The first few signals weren’t anything special, a few wheaties and one Rosie. I took a step back and noticed two large oak trees in the center of the lawn. I could imagine the previous resident sitting under their shade, doing laundry, all sorts of things. I decided to circle the trees and work my way out. About halfway around, I got a deep 84-86 with a sweet tone. I worked my way into a root filled plug, and got my hand around the edge and worked it out of the hole and was shocked to find my first military belt plate!”

My second U.S. favorite find is the Civil War Sweetheart locket, found by Joe E. from Florida with his AT Pro.

Joe’s story: “I was hunting a construction site in a very old part of Pensacola dating back to 1559. Working a dug up area, I swung my AT Pro over a dirt pile when I got a slamming signal. Out of that bulldozed dirt pile came this awesome Civil War sweet heart locket. Eagle button on one side, and two crossed muskets with a 13 star flag on the other.”

WINNER #3
My third U.S. favorite find is the Brass belt buckle w/anchor, found by Rob S. from Florida with his Garrett Ground Hog. Although this find was made nearly 40 years ago, it is timeless, and was found with the finest metal detector from the 1970’s invented by my father, Charles Garrett.

Rob’s story: “The year is 1976 in SE Wisconsin. New to the detecting hobby, I was out with my brand new Garrett Ground Hog, searching around a crumbling mid-1800s fieldstone foundation of an old homestead. Finding all sorts of “treasure”, my detector hit on this brass belt buckle adorned with an anchor. I have yet to identify it, but I’ve been told it’s not U.S., Spanish or English. In short, the expert didn’t know but in my opinion that would leave the French, who explored the area in the 1600s to early 1800’s. After 39 years, it is still a mystery. Any input would be much appreciated.”
