My Favorite International find for May 2012 is the Gold Guinea 1775 George III coin. Carl G. from Whitchurch, Shropshire, UK, was searching a very small field with his Garrett Ace 150. It was raining, yet he read that that wet ground gives better conductivity than when dry.

Carl shares his excitement. “I got an iffy signal and dug. Well what I saw made my eyes light up. It was still in the ground, but knew straight away it looked gold. I got my camcorder out and gently took the coin out of the ground. It glistened in the daylight. It was my first gold coin, my first gold anything! I was gob smacked...it turned out to be a Gold Guinea from 1775 George III. It couldn’t wait to go home and tell the wife, or anyone else that would listen!!! Thanks Garrett, you made my day.”

Congratulations Carl on your first gold discovery! Thanks for sharing your story.

My Favorite International find of the month for April 2012 is the 1672 Charles II Religious Reformation medallion.

Simon B. from Melbourne, Australia, tells us about this discovery. “I’m a proud owner of a Garrett GTI 2500 which to date has found my oldest medallion. It is dated back to 1672 and I still can’t understand how it got all the way here. It was found near a blue stone structure dating back to 1835 where a British family migrated here to Australia. Was it their’s? Or had it got lost somehow? We’ll never know, and that’s what makes this hobby so great and how else to find it but with a Garrett!”

Congrats to Simon B. for sharing this great discovery with Garrett!

This 1782 Spanish Reale coin is a real beauty. Sean M. from Middletown, DE, searched the site of an old amusement park. His AT Pro rang a solid 77-78 at 4 to 6 inches down and he thought it might be an Indian Head penny. Sean wrote, “When I got the coin out I didn’t know what is was. Further examination I saw it was a 1782 Spanish 1 Reale in excellent shape! Probably my find of a lifetime.”

This rare 1734 GEORGIVS II REX coin is a winner. With the help of his two sons, Ty (3) and Anthony Jr. (12), Anthony M. from Somerset, N.J. has the family hooked on treasure hunting. In fact, Ty is called the “Treasure Hunter” because on a few occasions he honed-in on good treasures before digging. Anthony wrote, “Ty kept running around the yard looking so puzzled until he suddenly stopped and yelled “Here, Dad, Here!” With dad checking the spot with his Ace 350, there sure enough was a beep. Anthony Jr. dug and to their amazement they recovered an old coin. They all ran inside, and upon cleaning it Anthony exclaimed, “Holy cow this is from the 1700’s!” It turned out to be a GEORGIVS II REX from 1734. Anthony and his sons are very excited about this rare find and have now discovered a family hobby that will last for generations.

My favorite find of the month goes to Iuliu-Christinel P. of Romania. What an impressive ring! It's a 28.41 gram (roughly 1 ounce) gold ring with carnelian seal Roman intaglio engraving that depicts a battle scene between mythological characters Hercules and Antaeus. It appears to be extremely old and in mint condition. I've never seen anything like it before.

Congratulations to Iuliu-Christinel P. with his GTI 2500 for discovering this unique European ring.

My favorite find for September 2011 is the sentimental family ring found by Rene’ C. from Cantanhede, Portugal.

In 1956, Rene’s grandparents married. As a wedding gift, Rene’s grandfather gave to his new wife (Rene’s grandmother) a special gold ring which had been worn for years by his mother who had passed away. A month after the wedding, Rene’s grandmother lost the ring on the farm during harvest time and cried for a long time about losing it.

Rene’ tells us, “After I heard the story, I bought a Garrett Ace 250 metal detector and promised to myself, no matter what, I would find it. One day after 5 months of hard work I found it, not in the land my grandmother told me about, but in a near path. I waited for their wedding anniversary to give it to them. I will remember that day as the most magical day of my life, seeing tears coming down their faces. After that, my life changed in a special way.”

Thank you Rene’ for sharing this loving story with us.
