My Favorite International find for July 2011 is the Byzantine Emperor Justinian II gold coin. This near-mint example was found by Jean-Philippe L. of Chagny, France with his Garrett GTP 1350 using a 25 by 35cm double-D coil. This remarkable coin is 20mm wide and weighs 4.43 grams. Justinian II reigned from 685 to 711 A.D. and was the last Byzantine Emperor of the Heraclian dynasty.

Occasionally, a discovered item will strike a visual scene. In a quest to accurately map out a 1,600-year-old Roman road, relic hunter Thorsten S. headed out with his GTI 2500, armed with the large imaging coil.
After an hour and many cut roots later, Thorsten recovered a complete Roman horseshoe called a hipposandal at 45 cm (18 inches) below the surface. It was in very good condition and fully intact with a ring and hooks to secure it to the hoof of a horse using leather straps rather than nails.
Congrats to Thorsten S. from Bavaria, southern Germany, for discovering the 1,600-year-old Roman hipposandal and for pinpointing a section of a Roman road where journeys had been made for centuries.

My Favorite International find this month is the Caesar-Augustus coin discovered by Engiell A. from Tirana, Albania, with his classic Garrett CXIII detector. This Roman Empire Octavian coin dates between the years 27 BC–14 AD, and appears to be in very fine condition. Engiell states in his testimonial that he has “secured life with money from the materials I found.” We at Garrett are pleased to read success stories, especially from this loyal Garrett customer of more than twenty years.
Thanks to Engiell for sharing his 2,000-year-old discovery with us.

I want to pass along my congratulations to our first winner of my International Favorite Find of the Month. He is Howard M. of Ludlow in England. Howard was using his new Garrett EuroACE metal detector when he discovered a hoard of silver coins that appears to date to the late 1500s or early 1600s. The top of the pot containing the coins was 9.5 inches (24 cm) deep. As seen in the photos, the hoard was carefully excavated by officials of the British Museum, who will evaluate the entire contents of the pot in due time.
Congrats to Howard M. for being my first winner and for recovering such a historic cache of English coins!
