My international favorite finds for August 2016 are the 18 British Columbia gold nuggets, found by Ken L. from Canada with his AT Pro International.
Ken’s story (edited): “Hi! I’ve had my Garrett AT Pro for a year and a half. Although I used to work for a gold exploration company in a historic gold rush area of British Columbia, I moved away long before I had this detector to use on a placer claim with nuggets. I recently visited the area while on a camping trip. A good friend had arranged permission for us to metal detect on an acquaintance’s placer claim – a spot where the owner is making a living from the gold, digging up nuggets, despite 150 years of miners digging on what is now his ground. The owner mines using an excavator and its bucket leaves scraps of gold bearing dirt behind. Too little dirt for him to care about, so he was happy to let us look at the ground he was done with. It was a very good day. By far my best day metal detecting, and far more gold than I had ever dug up prospecting on my spare time with a pan or a sluice. 18 pieces. 22.7 grams total. The largest being a quarter ounce (7.8g), the smallest being an amazingly small 0.14g. Even the smallest piece gave a distinct signal with an ID of 53. The AT Pro behaved great, and my Pro-Pointer AT sped up the process so I could cover more ground, and re-cover some of the ground once I really knew how the AT Pro was responding to gold.The AT Pro made it easy. You couldn't smack the grin off my face. Thank you for reading my story … and for making the tools that made that great day happen.”

Alex’s story: “At the beginning of August I went with family to a small village in the middle of the Italian Alps, where my grandfather grow up. I’ve decided to pickup with me my Garrett’s AT Pro. After 10 minutes searching, I had very good signal near old tree. I was totally mesmerized when I realized I found outstanding ancient Roman two thousand years old “Aucissa Fibulae”. My fourth international favorite find is the 10k Gold Diamond Ring with 13 Diamonds, found by Roger G. from Canada with his AT Pro International.
Roger’s story: “All hunted-out, you say? Me and my AT Pro International beg to differ! As I was leaving a local park I ran into a fellow detectorist. We talked for a few minutes and I showed him my finds for the day. He told me I was lucky to have found the few modern clads I had. Everyone had worked this park, he said, and it was pretty well all hunted-out. I headed home while he unpacked his equipment to “play around” a bit. I admit to being a bit disillusioned. With the increasing popularity of metal detecting I would have to think that most all accessible areas would be hunted-out with little chance of finding anything more than a few pennies. Then I flipped through the Garrett brochure and re-read the AT Pro International’s “Bring Hunted-Out Sites Back to Life”. The next morning I packed up my AT Pro International (armed with the 5x8 DD coil) and headed back to this “hunted-out” park. Not more than 15 minutes into the hunt and I locked onto my first find: a 10k gold woman's cluster ring with a 13 diamond setting! It was about 4 inches down and not more than 20 feet from where I had my conversation the day before. I can’t wait to get to that next “hunted-out” park!”

My international favorite find for July 2016 is the Hoard of 203 Republic of Latvia silver coins, discovered by Ivans M. from Latvia, with his AT Pro.
Ivans stated, “Hi. My name is Ivans and I am from Latvia. I went with friends on a long-known place with local diggers. Finds there have been little, but what else could be found? I had bought a Garrett AT Pro and walked near the car and adjusted the settings. When among the signals from the nails and other debris which repulsed the desire of other diggers, I heard a pleasant bell tone. I was curious and decided to dig up the signal. I can only say WOW and I immediately lost my voice. :) It turned out that this is only part of the signal. The excavated soil revealed glittering coins. Many coins. As it turned out, there were 203 silver coins of the first Republic of Latvia. Coins of 1, 2 and 5 lats. More than 2 kg of silver coins. It was really very surprising and unexpected discovery. My best discovery I found with Garrett AT Pro.”

Matias states (edited), “July 12, 2016 on vacation at a plantation area. A few minutes into an interesting signal, I dig a nice piece of colonial spur, some modern ammunition, and an interesting deep signal. I draw out a clod of earth, again broadening and deepening and I see … my first impression is “this is a joke …can not be true” a large gold shield! Brushed some dirt off. My hands were shaking. 8 escudos, 1788. It’s impossible to describe the joy of discovery, called my friends, traveling photos and conversations that happened … we name it “Scarface” affectionately as a plow or some machinery to work the land passed over leaving her loveless mark. hehe. My first gold coin … and currency!”

Piotr stated, “I want to show you what I found recently with my Garrett Ace 150 in the forest. There are four silver Roman coins and two Fibula, all within a radius of 1 meter and a depth of about 20 cm. Imagine my joy when I saw what comes out of the ground. The first time I was able to find such old items. My Garrett really gives me so much pleasure and joy that I can hardly describe. Garrett made that possible. Now I have a great passion and contact history. I will collect money for a higher model of the detector and it will, of course, be the detector from Garrett.”

There was one 76 signal after the next…PENG…80+… ok, a cane …bored about the cartridges I dig it out, and this on the pic comes out!”

My favorite international find for June 2016 is the Gold Quarter Noble of Henry VI, discovered by Ian H. from the U.K. with his EuroAce.
Ian’s story: (edited) “I have been metal detecting for over 30 years and bought my EuroAce after the machine appeared in a featured article in Searcher magazine in 2011. Since then I’ve had an amazing variety of finds dating from Iron Age through Bronze Age, Roman, right through Anglo Saxon and Medieval to the present day. In all those years though, the find that has eluded me has been a gold coin, that is, until May of this year when I was detecting a virtually barren field in Yorkshire when I had a clear ringing bell tone signal that is a sign of a good find with the Euroace. I scooped over the topsoil and there, shining in the sunlight, was a little yellow disc. I could hardly believe what I was seeing. When you've searched for something for so long it takes a while to recognise it for what it is when you see it. I called my detecting buddies over and, yes, not only had I found a gold coin but had come up with the Holy Grail of gold coins, a Hammered Gold coin. On my return home I submitted find spot details and photographs to the PAS (Portable Antiquities Scheme). The coin has been identified as a Hammered gold quarter noble, early issue of Henry VI based on the initial mark, a lis on the obverse and in the central panel on the reverse. The coin has been double struck and dates from 1422-1431 AD. This is a rare and valuable find.”

It lay about an inch below ground and I think I smiled about this find for three days. I did not plan to hunt this field and just ran my ACE 250 on a quick scan as I walked home from finding nothing for 7 hours previously.”

Leonardo’s story: “I went to prospect a sector where worked an old plantation of sugar cane. Bishop Colombres created there the first sugar industry in early 1800. I always find interesting relics in this sector, but today I found an old particularly interesting ring with the image of the virgin Mary of the Rosary of Saint Nicholas. It was at a depth of 25 cm, but the signal was exceptionally clear. It was very exciting to unearth something so beautiful with so much history.”

My second international favorite find for May 2016 is the Hoard of Roman Coins, with a Gold Roman Vitellius A.D. 69, discovered by John A. from U.K. with his AT Pro.
John’s story: “I was given permission to detect the spoils of a large coy carp pond that I was installing for a client as I am a landscape gardener. There was quite a pile as I had to dig down 6 feet. Unexpectedly I began to get some really good signals, to which I pinpointed 6 sliver roman coins, one of which is Mark Anthony 32-31 B.C. and various dates. Then to my amazement the glint of yellow, which turned out to be a very rare roman gold coin, Vitellius A.D 69 in mint condition! I could not believe what i was seeing. I have been detecting for a few years now with the Garrett AT Pro and it did the job. The coins are presently in hands of the British Museum as the coins are classed as treasure and you have to declare them in the UK. This may I say is my SUCCESS! story.”

Cristian’s story: (edited) “This wasn’t the first time to be in the area. We have been many times and we found a few WW2 relics. But while we stopped to eat something on the right side of the forest road I was testing ground balance and adjusting some of the settings. And while swinging the metal detector I had a high signal between 80 and 83 like most aluminium trash, and I was 100% it was a soda can. I almost decided not to dig but my brother told me if I’m not digging he will :D, so I started digging. After removing the first layer of soil I saw something grey but a little bit shiny on the edges. This was the first object from that pit and it was a silver bracelet. It was a little bit bent and had some cracks due to its location on the road just where the tires of forest vehicles are going. All the pressure over the years affected the relic. After digging out the first object I checked with my metal detector if there is any signal left and it was still strong and about the same value. Just under the bracelet were another two this time, one broken into three pieces and one still intact, but that wasn’t all. About 20 cm away from the edge of the road again, I had a high signal that was the cherry on the cake. Two beautiful “ring” necklaces also silver that were coiled for transportation and were maybe lost on the road. After taking photos, saving GPS coordinates, we called the authorities to pass all the relics to the archaeologists legally. We had a 72 hour period to admire the relics, take photos, and we also made a short video to show the treasure to the world by sharing it on the internet. In total were five pieces, two necklaces 40 and 60g of silver and three bracelets 13, 14 and 16g of silver. In total about 145g of silver! We cannot date these objects precisely but we think are 1800-2000 years old and are still waiting for the archaeologists answer for a more accurate dating. This treasure will be included on the list of National Heritage Goods of Romania and hopefully will be displayed in a local museum after classification and cleaning. David’s story: “This was from a permission that has not been too good for me. I was finding the usual workers buttons, lead bag seals, and the odd coin but you never know what’s under the dirt. This was a farmers field that recently had the plough through it, so I had a day off work and decided to go detecting. My International favorite find for April 2016 is the 242 Republican Roman Denars treasure 90-41 B.C., discovered by Anghel T. from Romania, with his AT Gold and AT Pro.
Anghel’s story: (edited) “Searching some old maps from 1800 we saw that some buildings from a hill do not exist anymore. So on 01.04.2016 me and two friends get in the car and search for them. After 5 steps with the AT Gold I get a strong signal 79-80...hmmm. Surprise: only 9-10 cm underground a very old Roman Denar. Could this be real? Don’t know. I yell to my friend with the AT Pro to come back and see the coin. Answer: Republican ROMAN DENAR. Can this Denar be alone around here ?!?!? Who knows, but how lucky can I be to get one? Anyway, we search the area…after 10 seconds, beep beep, signal 80-81on display, small hole, new coin! OK, let’s split, AT Pro on one side, AT Gold the other side, lots of signals, lots of holes, and YES lots of coins. End of day, let’s count 1,2,..,10,...100. We are lucky. 101, 102,... 242. Wow, google fast. One of the largest Roman Denars treasure ever found in our country. It’s probably beginners luck since I got my AT Gold about a month ago and I have only 20-25 detecting hours. My second international favorite finds for April 2016 are the 6 Gold Nuggets, found by Glen B. from Queensland, Australia, with his ATX.
Glen has been prospecting for over 20 years with pan and sluice but has never dug a nugget with a detector despite owning various machines for all those years. He has owned his ATX standard package for around 18 months. The large nugget is a shade under 1.5 ounces dug at 9 inches with the standard DD coil. He is going to go back with both the 20" mono and 8" coils to clean up the patch. Glen is over the moon.

My favorite international find for March 2016 is the 13.2 Gram Gold Aunslev Cross “Christ from Aunslev”, found by Dennis H. from Denmark, with his EuroAce.
Dennis’s story: “Friday, March 11. I have used my detector for three months now, and have mainly stuck to one particular field, as I often find objects from the Middle Ages. On a part of the field that was drying up, I had only just detected for 5 minutes when my detector gave a signal, a little shifty, but I had to dig! I was surprised of the Item before me, for suddenly there was a large gold jewelry lying on the ground flashing in the sun. It was a Birka crucifix, completely intact and in 13.2 grams of gold! I had now found the first (earliest) full complete crucifix in Denmark, and the third copy in the Nordic countries. I went completely nuts when I realised what I had found and barely slept for the next 5 days out of pure excitement.”
“The jewelry is older than the Jelling stone, meaning that the Danish history has to be changed in relation to when we became Christians. Until now the Jelling Stone has been the oldest Christian evidence in Denmark, but my crucifix has now amended that. My discovery has aroused enthusiasm among amateur and full-time archaeologists. Right now the history is everywhere, nationally and internationally, and since the museum broke the story, I have talked to and written with media from Denmark, USA and Canada. People from all over the world have contacted me on messenger and congratulated me with the item.”

My first international favorite finds for February 2016 are the Iron Age Fibulae and Ring Brooch, found by Rune N. from Norway with his AT Pro.
Rune’s story: “Hi. It’s winter in Norway and the ground is hard as rock most places, so I decided to take a trip to the beach together with a friend to see if we could find any rings or clad. We found nothing, so instead we tried the woods close to the sea in case the ground was “diggable” there. Three minutes into the search I got this iffy signal I thought was a button or bullet casing. It came as a shock when I saw what tumbled out of the ground. Two fibulae (iron age brooches) and one ring-brooch, all three about 1500 years old. I might have stumbled upon an ancient woman-grave. Archaeologists are deciding if it should be inspected further. A friend of mine managed to make a nice silver copy of the ring brooch as a memory of my discovery.“

Ole’s story: “I was hunting a football field from an old school with a friend of mine, he had found a few ww2 nazi coins and some silver rings, I kept finding coins from the 1990’s arghh. So we just talked a bit while walking. I went outside the field, but we have not permission to hunt there, so I just hunted as close without stepping into the trees. When I hit the target, the sound was clear as crystal and the item was only 15cm down. I picked it up, but was a bit unclear what it was, I could see it was silver as it was black, but did not know what I had there, I put in a small plastic box and hunted some more. At night I put it in a detector group on FB and there was fast 50 comments and 250 likes. The next morning I had a message on my cellphone from a guy in the local museum, he was also pretty excited over this piece, its very rare to find this in silver, normally they are in bronze. I dug a few 1800’s British coins and a small button which at the time I thought was just a regular civilian button. Once I got home I cleaned my finds and on the bottom I could see “48”. I got in touch with an online friend, Andy from Victoria, who knows ALOT about military history and he showed me a photo of a button from the “48th regiment of foot”. This button was a match! The 48th regiment of foot was established in England in 1741 and discontinued in 1881. They came to Australia in 1817 and left in 1824. My International favorite find is the hoard of 50 silver coins from the Danish Monarch Christian IV, 1586-1656, discovered by Bjorn S., Heinrich O., Lars H., and Simon K. from Denmark with their AT Pro’s.
Bjorn’s story: “Hello, I just wanted to share this awesome story of how me and 3 friends found a 1500 and 1600 century silver coin treasure this Christmas with our Garrett AT Pro metal detectors. Thank you for great detectors!! :-D” (Translated and edited article). An elderly lady told one of the four men a centuries-old legend that there would be a silver treasure in a certain area of a field outside Herning. As the legend would prove true, the four men with metal detectors started looking on December 27th, and over 2 to 3 days they found 50 silver cons from the period 1586-1656. Initially one of the friends found a large silver coin, while the rest of the responses were aluminum waste. But as the team was looking on, more and more silver coins appeared in the muddy soil, which all exhibited Christian IV. The local museum was jubilant, and Guanteng Museum’s curator Martin Olesen believes the coins in the society had great value. Total weight found about 850 grams. My favorite International favorite find is the U.S. Army Pvt. Anthony World War II Dog Tag, found and returned by Adam C. from the U.K. with his EuroAce.
Adam’s story: “Being somewhat of a newcomer to metal detecting I decided go purchase the Garrett Euroace as I’d heard fantastic reviews about the machine and loved the design and look to it. I wasn’t disappointed when it arrived and after a quick assembley I was out and about all over my new permissions. Yesterday, 22nd December, I detected a strong signal at a depth of 8 inches. As I dug excitedly I saw the tell-tale shine that so many people see when they unearth silver coins, although it wasn’t silver, it was better. It turned out to be a WW2 US Dog Tag belonging to Pvt. Henry C. Anthony who was stationed in the UK for a brief period prior to deployment to Normandy Beach. I was fascinated by the find and started researching immediately. My job was now to get this medal back where it belongs, with his family. Turns out he was traceable and although he passed away in 1995, he had a surviving neice who I was able to contact. When she heard the news of my find she was almost in tears as “He was an Uncle whom I loved so much. God Bless your heart”. One of the biggest draws to metal detecting for me isn’t just the hunt and the find, it’s the history of the object and how it got there. Coins/relics have value but memories of loved ones are priceless. Donna Anthony’s Christmas became a very special one.”

Mika’s Story: “This may not be the most valuable find ever, but it is the most exciting of all of my finds this year. A couple of days after the big rock concert with the Australian group AC/DC as the main act (55,000 tickets sold), I was detecting for coins and possibly jewelry in the park where the concert had taken place. Just before leaving I decided to check the area where the stage had been and got a very loud and clear high tone signal on my Ace 250. And there it was. A huge solid silver ring (25 grams)with the Vintage Trouble logo on it. Vintage Trouble was the American group that was supporting AC/DC on their “Rock or Bust” World Tour 2015. First I thought it was just a cheap fan ring as it did not have any hallmarks. Later at home I made a density weighing test and it was silver. Inside the ring there was engraved “Richard 3/5” and then it struck me: It was the ring of the drummer in the group, Richard Danielson. I also found a picture on Instagram where the group had just received their rings, one for each member. I believe the rings were a gift from Richard’s father. I tried to contact Mr. Danielson through Instagram and Facebook, but no luck. I would be happy to return the ring to him. I have enclosed two photos, one being the ring just when I found it and the other being a screenshot of Vintage Trouble's Instagram account. Maybe you at Garrett could help me with it?”
